CHLORHEXIDINE 2%, 70% isopropyl alcohol

Therapeutic Action

Broad-spectrum antiseptic combining 2% chlorhexidine gluconate and 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Isopropyl alcohol (70%) ensures immediate destruction of transient, resident micro-organisms on the stratum corneum

Chlorhexidine gluconate (2%) binds to the superficial layers of epidermal cells and exerts a residual (persistent) antimicrobial effect that prevents micro-organisms from multiplying.

Indications

Antisepsis of intact skin (excluding neonates)

Instructions for use

  • The coloured solution is intended for preoperative antisepsis on intact skin (better visualisation of the application area). Before the surgical incision, ensure that there is no pooling of the solution in skin folds or dripping to prevent burns when using an electrosurgical unit.
  • Swabs or wipes are intended for antisepsis of intact skin before procedures like IM injections (excluding vaccination), IV catheter insertions, venous blood sampling, lumbar punctures or accessing IV tubing.

Allow the solution to completely dry before any invasive procedure, without wiping it off, as this is essential for the effectiveness of the product.

Precautions for Use

Contraindicated in neonates (use the 2% chlorhexidine aqueous solution).

Do not use with soap or any other class of antiseptic, such as polyvidone iodine (incompatibility).

Transport Dangerous Goods

UN transport code for solution:

  • UN 1993 - Flammable liquid, n.o.s.
  • Transport Class 3 - Flammable liquids
  • Packing Group II - Substances and preparations presenting a serious toxicity hazard

UN transport code for swabs/wipes:

  • UN 3175 - Solids containing flammable liquid, n.o.s
  • Transport Class 4.1 - Flammable solids, self-reactive substances, solid desensitized explosives and polymerising substances
  • Packing Group II - Substances and preparations presenting a serious toxicity hazard
  • Not regulated in quantity of less than 10 ml

Storage

  • Below 25ºC - Protect from sunlight
  • Tightly close the bottle after each use to prevent contamination.
  • Store in a well-ventilated place.
