KIT, BACTERIOLOGY LABORATORY Mini-Lab

Definition

The Mini-Lab is a clinical bacteriology laboratory, all-in-one, autonomous, transportable, at an affordable cost and is adapted to the areas of intervention of MSF and other health actors in Low Resource Settings (LRS).

This standardised kit is designed to set up a robust clinical bacteriology lab for diagnosis of sepsis and urine tract infections.

  • “All in one kit” with 6 modules, transportable, fully equipped and modular
  • With integrated quality management system (procedure, training, software, etc.)
  • That can be safely run by lab technician non expert in clinical bacteriology

Indications

Within the Mini-Lab, you can identify and determine the antibiotic susceptibility profile of bacteria responsible for sepsis or urinary tract infections and thus:

  • Improve the quality of patient care and antibiotic prescribing practices
  • Contribute to the surveillance of antibiotic resistance in remote areas
  • Detect the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria

Clinicians are able to better treat patients and have access to clinical-based ABR surveillance.

A modular and adaptable concept that can fit in various contexts:

  • Fixed mode in regular projects with or without laboratory facilities on site to help treat patients and know pathogen or ABR prevalence in a specific area
  • Mobile mode in several projects within one country for ABR surveillance to perform point prevalence surveillance on the different site for fixed periods.

For MSF, target populations that should have access to a clinical bacteriology laboratory (CBL) are hospitalised patients: severely ill children, burns patients suspected of sepsis, HIV patients and patients with any suspicion of having sepsis
